Humor in the workplace

11/15/2008

I was just asked (well sort of asked) if I would be willing to give a 45 minute presentation on this subject for a seminar next year.

At first I was thinking “no” … but I have heard from others that they thought I always made the work place fun. I know from a study I did that including appropriate humor (fun) in the workplace actually leads to people staying longer at the job, more productivity and less time off for “illness” (illness as defined by those that decide to call in “sick” when they aren’t).

I thought it would at least be an interesting discussion.

Does fun help or hurt the work environment? Thoughts?

Because I might include some of the answers in the seminar, would you please pass this around for others to chime in? (normally I don’t ask)

Oh, it’s definitely helpful. Brings up morale, and breaks up what’s often tedious and boring. I mean, really… there’s a reason why they call it “work.” I think humor helps make it more palatable.

I feel humor in the work place allows us take breather when things get stressful. It keeps us relaxed so we are able to a better job.

Going to work where the mood is lighthearted is always the best environment. Of course you want to make sure it’s appropriate.

I remember trying to inject humor in the workplace with the “Installment”, and I remember getting shot down pretty quickly… :)

I was for it … management wasn’t. I still think it was an awesome idea!

Vin brings up a good idea … what are some areas that you have seen appropriate humor impact you positively at work?

Some broadcasters prefer to present animated humor as antiquated humor in an attempt to prompt public interest to turn in the direction of the animated humor cartoon programs that center on wizardly deeds and demons that threaten the total existence of the human race. Some of these characters act stupid enough to cause world destruction but are in no way the animated humor we have all come to know and love through the years.:`;^
